Design and Designer

Our universe is a marvelous thing to behold. The way life around us operates seems to indicate that it has been synchronized beautifully by the laws of nature in motion. This may cause us to wonder, “is there a powerful designer behind all of this?” Have you ever considered the life altering implications if this is true? Below are some questions I’d like for you to dwell on.

How did anything start?

What started all things to exist in the first place? Thomas Aquinas, a medieval philosophical theologian (1225-1274), gave five arguments for the existence of a God, his first argument in appealing to God’s existence states, ‘it is certain, and evident to our senses, that in the world some things are in motion.”1((Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologia 1.2.3.co.)) How did the motion of ‘anything’ ever began? We know that which is created cannot create itself. Therefore, if the universe consists of time, space, and matter, whatever caused the universe is timeless, spaceless, and immaterial. For example, would anyone propose that a car engine could arise through time, chance, and random mutations? What about your iPhone? When you and I see a car or iPhone we know they are the result of an intelligent being. Why then hold to a naturalistic explanation for the existence of the universe if there are markers of design within the universe? It seems then the core qualities mentioned regarding the cause of the universe points to God.

Is there an example of Fine-Tuning?

An example of design is the fine-tuning of the universe. Within this fine-tuned universe the velocity of light is critical. The speed of light is calculated to be 186,282.42 miles per second. If it were faster, stars would be too luminous for life; if it were slower, stars would not be luminous enough for life2((David H. Levy, Cosmology 101 (ibooks inc, 2003),76.)).Taken individually, these are just “lucky accidents” or “anthropic coincidences’” but taken together, these laws provide evidence for an intelligent designer.

Conclusion

While skeptics like Princeton University physicist, Freeman Dyson might believe “There are many lucky accidents in physics…without such water could not exist”3((Freeman J. Dyson, Disturbing the Universe (New York: Basic Books, 1979), 251.)) on the contrary, these pieces of evidence above, provide good reasons to believe that our universe was created by a necessary existing divine mind…God. Thus, the grand design has a grand Designer.
