Dear Rhett, Can We Talk?

Dear Rhett,

I watched your YouTube video the other day, the one where you said that you gave up your Christian worldview. I want to ask you some questions.

Before I do, I would like to commend you for sharing such a personal and emotional story with the world. Not having experienced this myself, I can only imagine how hard it was to talk about your deconversion, knowing many people would be shocked, angry, and even judgmental. While we disagree about Christianity, I commended you for your courage.

With that said, I'd like to ask you one question and relate it to several of the doubts and concerns you mentioned during your podcast. By my count, you mentioned 16 serious doubts or questions which contributed to your giving up Christianity. My question is this: If the resurrection is true, is Christianity true?

  1. If the earth is more than 10,000 years old and the resurrection is true, is Christianity true?
  2. If there is limited archaeological evidence for the Exodus or Egyptian enslavement and the resurrection is true, is Christianity true?
  3. If God commanded Israel to kill people as capital punishment for their crimes and the resurrection is true, is Christianity true?
  4. If people don't choose if they are born, but choose to reject God and the resurrection is true, is Christianity true?
  5. If Christians are hypocritical and hypercritical of other faith groups and the resurrection is true, is Christianity true?
  6. If we don't have every answer to every question we could ever think but the resurrection is true, is Christianity true?
  7. Even if apologists and past spiritual leaders never brought up these issues when you were younger but the resurrection is true, is Christianity true?

I know this specific list doesn't cover everything you mentioned, but I think you see my perspective on these issues. Yes, these are serious concerns that you, I, and millions of people wrestle with on their faith journey. Rhett, you and I may never see eye-to-eye on things like the age of the earth, creation of hell, or archaeology and the Old Testament and that’s ok. I do think you and I can both agree that even in light of the objections you've raised, if Jesus rose from the dead, Christianity is true.

I realize you may never come across this blog and that even if you do, you may disregard it, but I want you to know, I love you and Link and I hope your faith journey will continue. Maybe this question will help you: If Jesus rose from the grave, is Christianity true?

Sincerely,
Dean Meadows
